Making the Invisible Visible—Helping Students Develop Their Textual Awareness through Visualization

Abstract: Writing tasks require writers to make countless composing decisions. But decisions underlying writing are often abstract, thus hard to make tangible for students. In this proposed talk, we present two computer-aided environments, DocuScope Classroom and OnTopic, which we have developed recently to help students notice and reflect on composition decisions in their writing and become more self-aware and reflective writers.
